How do you choose HSS twist drill bits? Many broken or overheated drill tips are caused by choosing the wrong material. This guide compares 4241, M2 and M35, and explains when titanium coating is useful.
Grade 4241 regular HSS is budget-friendly. It is suitable for wood, plastic, thin iron and aluminium, but it can lose hardness quickly on stainless steel. It is often selected for DIY work, occasional drilling and large, cost-sensitive bulk purchases.
M2 fully ground HSS is a standard industrial grade. It performs well on carbon steel, cast iron, copper and aluminium. Short, intermittent drilling in thin stainless steel may be suitable, but continuous heavy cutting can create excessive heat. M2 is a practical choice for factories and repair shops seeking a balance between cost and durability.
M35 cobalt drill bits contain 5% cobalt throughout the steel body. They are designed to remain stable at high temperatures, resist heat and reduce tip chipping during demanding drilling. M35 is commonly considered for stainless steel, tempered carbon steel, die steel, alloy steel and thick cast iron, with the final choice confirmed by the application and sample testing.
Do not confuse titanium coating with cobalt. Titanium coating is a golden surface layer, often applied to M2 drills, that can reduce chip adhesion and improve surface wear resistance. M35 contains cobalt throughout the steel body and does not depend on a coating for its heat resistance.
The quick guide is: choose 4241 for casual soft-material work, Ti-coated M2 for regular steel processing where the finish is specified, and solid M35 cobalt for stainless steel and harder alloys. Send the material, sizes, finish, packaging and expected quantity when requesting a quotation.
